“Comfort and luxury are usually the chief requirements of life for your ego – its top priorities tend to be accumulations, achievements, and the approval of others.” – Wayne Dyer
“It’s a good person, but it’s something bad about them,” as my seven year old described ego.
Ego in a nutshell is a sense of who we are physically. It is how we may be perceived by the outside world by the 5 senses: touch, smell, taste, sight and hearing. It is what makes us feel separate from our fellow beings. But who we truly are may sometimes be hidden by the ego, especially when the dualistic beliefs are very strongly reflected in that ego.
Let’s imagine that the ego is like a clear iphone cover and you are a beautiful shining golden iphone (comparable wouldn’t you say, since our souls are made of light or spirit anyway).
If you as the iphone have an opaque cover, it hides the shining golden phone within. When we cleanse that cover to reduce the opacity and the clearer it becomes, the more authentically the golden nature of the iphone can shine through.
Through spiritual practice, by acknowledging the denseness of the ego and trying to clear it layer by layer, we develop clarity to our ego that is most compatible with our authentic self.
My conversations with my ego came to me today as this poem. Funny that it took me so many years to write a poem again. So here we go:
EGO
It’s been long since I wrote a poem too
So let me say a word or two
About this thing called ego….
*****************************************
*****************************************
“I AM – the sense of me, the sense of you,
The sense of self and all you knew,”
Says this thing called ego….
*************************************************
*************************************************
“I taught you well your identity,
Things you now call vanity,”
So says my ego….
***********************************************
***********************************************
“I helped you fight, I helped you cope,
I kept you safe more than you could hope,”
So claims my ego….
*****************************************
*****************************************
“Thank you dear for your kind part
In giving my life a big head-start,”
Now I say to my ego….
*******************************************
*******************************************
“You taught me well, now let’s move on,
I’m past the stage of holding on
To this thing called ego……
****************************************
****************************************
Ego dwells within my head
But I seek heart-based love instead,
Dear thing called ego……
*****************************************
*****************************************
I love to know who I truly am:
The supreme source – its child I am
Oh my dear ego
**************************************
**************************************
It serves me not to stay apart
From all creation, of whom I am a part
So let’s part now, my ego!
************************************
************************************
Thank you for having given me hope
At times when it was hard to cope,
Hear this too, my ego….
***************************************
***************************************
I am wiser now, and I set you free
As I can cope by just being me,
God bless and adieu, my ego!”
