The Hidden Cause of Burnout No One Tells You

Is your career being a barrier to fully enjoying life in a way that brings you great joy?

Are you living your days like an incomplete version of yourself?

If you answered yes to either question, you are not alone. Many of my clients and myself have found ourselves in your shoes at some point.

Professional women sail through life trying to fit into the checkboxes of professional expectations. Often they do not realize that somewhere inside, this may not align with what feels right to them.

But they continue this path since there was no other way shown to them to meet those professional expectations … .till one day they realize this is wearing them down. By then they are exhausted, overwhelmed and even burned out.

On the surface, some of the reasons may look like:

  • An overwhelming 100 things on her to do list
  • Struggling to keep up with a never ending to do list
  • Extra work-related documentation that eats up her evenings and family time
  • Losing autonomy at work
  • A deep sense of dissatisfaction that now makes her question how this was once her dream job or if she is even good enough for it anymore

But it is much deeper than that. This exhaustion may not go away with just getting enough hours of sleep. It’s not a sleep-deprived tiredness; it’s a bone wrenching, soul wringing kind of tiredness!

What they may not realize is that they have lost touch with what it is that makes them come alive. Their lives have become robotic, lacking the joy of experiencing the humanity and the life essence in others they work with and live with… and even themselves.

They have become a faded version of themselves. They find it hard to engage with the world in a way that feels true to them any more.

Their life no longer aligns fully with their passions and purpose, though it looks good in the eyes of society. The same work that would have served their passion and purpose in the past, is no longer able to do that in a way that gives back to them. It only seems to take away valuable years of their life.

They find it hard to contribute to the world using their unique gifts and abilities without being shamed for not fitting into professional norms. They in fact feel guilty to even think about following what makes them happy.

They have transformed so much over the years to fit in that they do not recognize themselves any more.

But the good part is, this is not the end of the road for them. Their lives were meant to move beyond this. They were meant to uncover the fully alive version of themselves, hiding within…to find their own light shining within, and let it shine for the world to see and maybe even show others the way out!
